As internet service and computers have gotten faster, images have been allowed to become bigger and with higher resolutions. There are also more of them. Today, most modern sites have large banner images and sliders adorning the top of their homepage. Multiple high-resolution images are available for most products on eCommerce sites. After all, your customers want to examine every little detail and angle of the shoes they might buy.
Give the Right Impression
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but online it’s worth a million. When someone first comes to your website, you have a few short seconds to grab their attention and make a good first impression. The images on your site can make up a large part of that first impression. You want to give them the right kind of impression. Not much can hurt your chances of turning a visitor into a customer more than low-quality images.
Grab Their Attention
Aesthetically pleasing photographs will grab the attention of prospective customers faster than anything. – Ones that depict the product, service, feeling, lifestyle, or result they desire. Sometimes a great image can capture more than one of these. You need to ask yourself, “Why do people want this product/service?” and “What are the main benefits?” Then, capture or procure quality images that show the answers to those questions. The reason they need to be quality, professionally taken and edited photos, is because people are not just deciding if they want to buy the product or service you’re providing. They’re also deciding whether or not they want to buy it from you or your competition. Do your images convey the desired look and feel of your company to everyone who sees them? If you’re not sure or don’t have a good eye for these things, ask someone who does. It is so much better and more efficient to face these issues now, than lose business day after day due to not taking action.
The best way to make sure that your website has strong images that send the right message is to not settle for cheap photography. There are several websites out there that have stock photos that you can use. They’re taken by professionals and can usually get the message across that you want to share. There are sites that provide free photography, but the selection is smaller and sometimes they insist that you provide credit to the photographer on your site. Most images you have to pay for. Shop around a little and see where you can find the best deal. However, stock photos can tend to have a “fake” or disingenuous feel about them that could be almost as ineffective as a poor image quality.
Hiring a professional photographer, although costly, is also a smart solution. A hired photographer can capture the exact vision you have. If you’re taking the photos on your own, it can be risky if you don’t have professional photography training or experience. Although the phone cameras are getting better, avoiding camera phones and point-and-shoot cameras is recommended for most situations. The image quality might be not as good as you think and look less than professional and your audience will likely be able to see that.
Great images can also be used in social media, email marketing, and offline marketing, in print ads and other things. So any investment can pay off in many ways. If you have any questions about specific situations, contact us here. We’re always happy to help.
